“Drone metal suggests silence even in its cacophonous noise, departing beyond music to seek its opposite, toward which it gestures while facing away. If God is the reason, the guarantee and the impossible limit of a mystic theology (…), then drone metal’s mystic noise is founded on an absence of sound which determines all sound”.

“Foot-Candle: the amount of illumination the inside surface of a one-foot-radius sphere would be receiving if there were a uniform point source of one candela in the center of the sphere”

Since last summer, I’ve been devoting my (very little) spare time to write music. Or, more precisely, I’ve praying and meditating.
It is very well known that the 2020’s Great Confinement was a breakdown of the psicosocial axis at a global level that each one of us managed, intimately, as good as we could. Mi crack of clarity between working, housework, caring, doomscrolling, the anxiety caused by the need (and, at the same time, the inability) to come up with new rules for the idiot games of life and art during the pandemic, and several personal and family downfalls, came after I picked up my guitar again and, once more, was fascinated by the fulfilling sensation of making another body speak with one’s voice and say what can’t be said in no other way. I took some lessons, callouses came back to my figertips and started practising daily, at any moment I could –sometimes, just for ten minutes, other, for a couple of hours.
On those moments, everything was blank. The world ouside was dying, and the extatic contemplation of the nearly cadaver suggested riffs, armonies y feedback loops that arranged themselves, stretched and went on repeat on my head like a prayer. On my own, playing that music, everything made sense. FOOTCANDLE, in a way, arised spontaneously.
The name for this crazy enterprise stem from a conversation that ended on, as many conversations do nowadays, talking about fear. Fear of the dark, specifically. I’m not affraid of the dark and, in the middle of an attempt to unravel why it not only not scares me but comforts me, how is it possible that my instincts can be so crooked that I bigotedly believe that the unseen can’t hurt you, I realised that what terrifies me is light, is the seen, is the painful consciousness of the limits of knowledge and the crippling rigidity of systems, the material and the empirical. Hence, it also makes sense that my hallucinatory pseudo-religious practice served as a way of managing that particular horror and was named after a unit of illuminance not included on the International System of Units.
FOOTCANDLE is an experimental drone metal project. Now just mine, but open to any mutation or alternative embodiment(s) that may come in the future. It is founded on two basics thart are very, very important to me: the reflection of the meditative praying to this ruin where we are trying to survive and the full and unreserved adhesion to DIY ethos.
FOOTCANDLE uses shattered guitars, cheap and second hand amps, pedals and microphones, and open software for sampling, recording and editing. Every reference of the project is under a NC-SA 3.0 Creative Commons license and can be dowloaded from bandcamp in name-your-price mode.
The first of them is Cloud EP, including two pieces: Clouds Roil & Hide the Slaughterhouse and Ontodialysis. The start of the journey, when low clouds hide the slaughterhouse so we can ignore it for a while and go on our way to remove and cleanse the toxins from a general ontology that is consuming us.
Soon, if nothing blows up, two more releases will come: Cancer EP and Comfort EP. Together, Cloud, Cancer and Comfort will form the Emittance : Exitance LP, the encapsulation of what is FOOTCANDLE as of today.
It’s been 17 years since the last time I wrote music, and I’ve rarely played any instruments in that time. And, after creating and being part of many alternative metal, grunge, punk, industrial and folk bands, this is the first time I feel like I’m truly expressing myself through music.
This is precisely why, for expression itself, FOOTCANDLE is now also yours.
